Sunday, October 14th, at the auspicious location of the Hanuman Mandir, in Hempstead, Long Island, a Yagnya was performed. Yagnya is an ancient Hindu ritual, a fire worship, to propitiate and invoke the Almighty. The unique feature of this Yagnya was that it was a Sangeet. yagnya-worship through music. Hindu mythology claims that more than any prayer is a recitation of a mantra called Japa, inspirational music that takes you instantaneously into the realm of the divine.
This Sangeet yagnya was performed to bring international peace, harmony, and mutual understanding in the wake of the dual tragedies of September 11th. It was performed by Sangeet Martand Padma Vibhushan Pandit Jasrajji, in the presence of H.H. Sri Sri GuruMaa Jyotisanand Saraswati, and the Consul General of India in New York, Mrs. Shashi Tripathi. He was accompanied by Pandit Sameer Chattterjee on Tabla, Tripti Mukherjee on Harmonium as well as vocal support, and by Marina Alam, Swami Madhavanand, and Chandrika Tandon on Tanpura.
There were inspirational invocations to Adideva-Surya, Shakti-Durgamata, Hanumanji, and Shankar Bhagwan along with verses from the Bhagwat Geeta. The melodious voices of Pandit Jasrajji, accompanied by Triptiji and the Tabla that was played like a Damaru, an instrument of Lord Shiva, by Sameerji made everyone transcend into a devotional trance.
There were prayers rendered to the unfortunate innocent victims, as well as to the volunteer firemen and policemen, who with full knowledge of the danger, undertook the hazardous journey in order to save others, as well as for general world peace as such.
